Highlights from the Last 40 Years from 1976

Our Clubs beginnings

1976 – 1979

  • June 1976 – The first Tea Meeting was also a Ladies Night and fully supported by sponsoring Ngongotaha Club. Twelve members were involved in the first activity of establishing the grounds of the new Mokoia Intermediate School.

  • July 1976 – Pruning of fruit trees for local widow; 25 members were involved in collecting for Braille.

  • August 1976 – First Charter Night for the Club

  • September 1976 – Te Puke Club was raided and our Charter Night gift of two guinea pigs were passed on; First members lost and first new members inducted

  • 1976 – Projects included a working bee at a local kindergarten where a sandpit was installed; a collaboration with a bottling firm where Lions earned two cents from each bottle collected

  • 1977 – Along with the Geyserland Club ran a very successful fundraising activity – DIG IN – many hundreds of participants with digging licenses sold – this became an annual project going forward; building jetties at Hannah’s Bay & Lake Tarawera

  • February 1977 – Assisted local angling club to build a jetty at Hannah’s Bay

  • April 1977 – A feature of the Ladies Night was a rolling fine instead of the usual tail twister with an extra heavy purse resulting

  • February 1978 -20 crippled children taken for a picnic to Lake Tarawera; IHC door to door collection; sponsored children to Waiotapu Camp

  • April 1978 – Rotorua’s Fletcher Marathon saw twelve members manning two special drink stations – this became an annual project going forward

  • September 1978 – Held disco at Mokoia Intermediate; 12 members worked all day cutting and delivering pungas with $500 profit – one of many such drives in the future

  • 1979 – Projects included sheep manure sales, punga drives, bottle drives, painting buildings, and carpark lines, firewood cutting and storing
